Somethin' 'Bout a Boat

I thought about writing a complete and thorough recap of my long Fourth of July weekend, and then two things occurred to me:
1. A good amount of you probably don't want to read a post that long
2. I don't particularly want to write a post that long today

So instead, let's do it like this.

Things I Did This Weekend:

- Made last cup in pong for the first time in a good handful of years
- Repeatedly lost in pong to my 60-year-old cousin
- Drank enough gin & tonics to satisfy my summer hankering
- Ate enough food to last me til Thursday in reserves {We're Italian. My cousins own a pizzeria. This requires no further explanation}
- Floated in the lagoon on a raft with my family floating all around me
- Floated on a raft in an inflatable pool while my cousins and I bounced off each other in rafts much too large for an inflatable pool
- Got a DIY facelift from being out on the boat {We like to go fast}
- Got a super sexy nose sunburn
- Led my uncle, aunts, and stepmom through a morning yoga practice on the deck — then took intermission and resumed when my cousins' neighbor climbed over the fence to join us :)
- Floated on a raft in the bay between my cousin's and my uncle's boats with a bunch of cousins and cocktails
- Peeped at least 5 fireworks shows each night — thanks neighbors, cousins, & the Township of Toms River
- Coached my two 50-something aunts through a game of beer pong — they actually made a couple of cups!
- Nearly lost my bathing suit top due to said boat speeds
- Make a 1.5 hour drive in roughly 4
- Was reminded constantly of how lucky I am to have such a close and loving family
- Thanked my lucky stars that almost all of the cousins made it down for Cousins Weekend — it takes a lot to get all of us in the same place at the same time, but when we do, it's like nothing else in this world

Things I Did Not Do This Weekend:

- Take my vitamins, even though I portioned and packed them oops
- Wear makeup
- Feel bad about not wearing makeup
- Check or update Twitter or Instagram
- Check or update Facebook, but I rarely do anyway, so it doesn't count much
- Sleep well — big thanks to the comfy-to-sit-on-but-not-to-sleep-on couch and my enormous cousins who evidently challenged each other to a snoring battle in either side of me
- Stick to my running/training plan
- Give a damn about work problems or house-hunting issues
- Wear enough sunscreen to keep the sunburn totally away — 85% ain't bad though!
- Take many pictures...

So I was thinking about the whole picture-taking, memory-capturing thing on the {looong} drive home. And there are a couple of reasons why I don't generally return from cousins weekends with a ton of pictures. One is that we're usually in too much disarray/chaos/inebriated states to take a decent looking, non-blurry, well-lit photo. Another is that there are so many of us, and so much going on at one time, that it's impossible and crazy to try and stop the madness for a moment to capture it.

But the third reason is my favorite: These moments aren't really fleeting. Sure, this weekend, this moment, this boat ride, will never occur again. But there will be so many more, and they will be just as much fun, if not more fun, than this weekend. And the next time we get together, we will recall moments like these and swap stories and fill in the early-crashers and the late-risers on every good time. I don't need a photo to capture these memories, because I couldn't forget them if I tried.

Weekends like this are the perfect remedy for the way I've been feeling lately. The thing is, my life in general is pretttty damn good. You know by now that I'm feeling a little bit restless at work and starting to stress about the apartment search, but those really are just minor details in the grand scheme of things. Because in the grand scheme of things, I have the best safety net a girl could ask for, the most loving and supportive and helpful and kind family anyone could ever need, and the best memories and times to look forward to that I could ever hope to call mine.

Did you have a long weekend? How did you celebrate??

  1. Not wearing make up on the weekend is one of the best feelings almost up there with making the final cup in pong!! I totally agree - sometimes it's just too much to stop the fun that you're having to take a photo!! Life is all about the little moments - glad you soaked them all in!

  2. I love hearing about your family time (it gives this Italian a nice glimpse into what it's like to actually have the stereotypical Italian family lol !) mostly because I can only imagine the amount of sass flying back and forth. I'm pretty sure from stories I've heard you guys would be YouTube famous in like .5 seconds :)

I'm glad you had a good holiday weekend ! Let's find another one soon and get you back down to NC !

  8. So true about the pictures! I'm not the best at remembering to take them, and I especially don't feel like taking them if I feel like doing so will make that moment more artificial. Sometimes I worry that I'll forget, but a lot of times I find it's just the opposite. I definitely tend to better remember the things I have photos from, but it's almost more fun to be reminded, out of the blue, of something I had totally forgotten about.

  12. help: Made last cup in pong for the first time in a good handful of years - what does that mean? beer pong?
minus the beer pong, your family sounds so much like my family, especially my italian family. anywho. its so true though, sometimes i get caught up worrying about this or that and its not as important as my family and friends who will be there no matter what. you said it well :)
and omg no matter what i do my nose always gets burned.

  13. Sounds like the perfect weekend!!!
I ate my weight in M&M's this weekend. We were at my aunts house and she keeps little jars of them everywhere. I was eating those things by the handful. Ugh!
So glad you had fun!!! :)

  15. I like how you presented your weekend. Even though I made it the theme on the link-up this month I gotta say I'm not the biggest fan of reading a thousand weekend recap posts. I am forever grateful to you and your list of things you did/didn't do....I agree with the fleeting moments. I take way more pictures since blogging then I used to but even now I forget b/c I'm too busy enjoyin myself. After the fact though I kick myself haha
